Celebrate Juneteenth with Stories, Self-Love & Art at Global Village

By Sarah Watson Outreach & Marketing Coordinator June 17, 2025

Juneteenth — also known as Jubilee Day or Freedom Day — marks the end of slavery in the United States and honors the ongoing struggle for freedom, equity, and belonging.

This June, the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures invites families across Northern Colorado to join us in celebrating this important holiday through story, creativity, and community.

On Wednesday, June 18, children and their families are invited to a special Juneteenth Read-Along and Art Session from 10 am to noon.

We will read inspiring picture books such as Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o and I Love My Hair! by Natasha Anastasia Tarpley. These heartwarming stories encourage self-love, celebrate diversity, and remind young readers of the beauty within themselves and those around them.

Following the read-along, kids will dive into a hands-on arts & crafts session. Older children can create colorful self-portraits that reflect how they see themselves and their uniqueness, while younger kids can enjoy themed coloring pages inspired by the day’s stories. This family-friendly program creates space for meaningful conversations about Juneteenth’s history and traditions while celebrating identity, culture, and community. Whether you are already familiar with Juneteenth or learning about it for the first time, all are welcome to join in the celebration.

Admission is $35 for participating children $10 for Museum youth members, and all materials are provided.

Come celebrate Freedom Day and leave with art, joy, and new perspectives!

The Global Village Museum is located at 200 West Mountain Avenue, and Museum hours are 11 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday.
