Celebrating our nation's Declaration of Independence on July 4th
is a long-standing tradition,
but do you know some of these facts?
π The declaration stated the 13 colonies separation from the British empire and open with the most famous and important statement “We hold these truths to be self-evident that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”
𧨠July 2nd is when the Declaration of Independence was voted on. The actual paperwork was not ready and signed until the 4th. The Liberty Bell did not actually ring on the 4th (or the 2nd), it rang on the 8th during the first public reading.
π Three of our presidents died on the 4th of July Holiday. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson died within hours of each other July 4th, 1826. James Monroe died on Independence Day in 1831.
π Independence Day has always been celebrated in showing of patriotic symbols like red, white & blue items, Stars, Stripes, Flags, etc. Celebrations including parades, public readings of the Declaration of independence. Cannons firing became non-existent around the 1890s. Military salutes continue as a show of patriotism, and fireworks were the earliest federal authorized way to celebrate being declared in 1777.
𧨠Over 1400 cities across the nation celebrate the 4th with fireworks. Macy’s fireworks celebration is the largest in the nation with over 75000lbs being displayed in the 1/2 hour show which is viewed by over 2 million people. In 1941 (some say 1938) was when the 4th was declared a federal holiday.
π Don’t forget that we as a nation also celebrate with FOOD! Much of it is grilled meat of various kinds! We also love fruit and watermelon is the most popular on this holiday.
β¨ No matter how you celebrate the day of America’s independence one thing is for sure. You will be looking for fireworks! β¨
