How did celebrating Fathers' Day begin?
Well, there are two different stories on how the holiday began.
The first Father's day was celebrated in Washington State on June 19th, 1910. Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring her father while listening to a Mothers' day sermon at church in 1909. She felt that Fathers deserved credit too. Her father William Smart was a veteran of the Civil war and was left a widower when his wife died during the birth of their sixth child. He raised all six children himself on their Washington farm.
The second story happens in Fairmont West Virginia July 5th 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the local Methodist Church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men.
President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Fathers' Day become a national holiday but nothing official happened until 1966 when Lyndon B. Johnson designated the third Sunday in June to become the official celebration of Fathers' Day. In 1972 the Nixon administration officially recognized the day as a National holiday.
