What can you typically find at a winter farmers market? |
Everything including a wide range of seasonal produce, such as winter squash, carrots, radishes, potatoes, onions, apples, microgreens, and mushrooms! You can also find tasty baked goods, such as homemade sourdough loaves, cookies, pastries, and even pies for all your holidays (don't forget birthdays)!
There are other wonderful foods such as milk, cheeses, and meats from local farmers as well as hand crafted artisan gifts and skin care products such as soap and lotions all with natural ingredients. Don't be surprised by finding greens year round too! Many farmers have heated greenhouses.
Some additional surprises at local winter farmers markets are the pantry items like dried beans, freshly ground flour, honey for the baking season.
Jams, sauces and prepared foods are also a welcome change from the usual store bought brands and flavors.
Visiting the local winter farmers market, much like the summer markets, creates a connection from farmer to consumer. You get to know your grower, the person who puts in the hours to grow, bake, and make the goods that go on your table. It's a great learning experience for you're children to know these producers face to face too. This way they get a fundamental understanding of where food comes from. Not just seeing it at the grocery store. Shopping directly also helps farmers sustain so they can keep the farms running and producing.
Take some time this winter to drop in and visit with some of the farmers and artisans at a winter market this year.
